For Mitch (Hamish Linklater), a mangy slacker who carries his father's ashes around in a plastic mug, the coping mechanisms for grief include pulling a gun on a convenience-store clerk and a halfhearted attempt at poisoning the neighbor???s dog. His wiry, lonesome girlfriend (Marin Ireland), who works at a doughnut shop despite her nearly ontological aversion to doughnuts, bears the brunt of his malaise, and she longs for an escape. Set in a banal world of Slim Jims, lawn flamingos, and New Jersey pit stops, this story of working-class nihilism seems like an odd-fitting tenant for Studio Dante, Michael Imperioli's opulent jewel box of a theatre, but Ron Fitzgerald???s bleak comedy pulls you deep into its sooty, broken heart. |
